About Oliver Klimpel

Oliver Klimpel - born 1973 in Dresden - is a designer who has been leading various projects for clients from the cultural, educational and commercial sector, after studying at the Leipzig Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, Central St Martins College of Art & Design and the Royal College of Art London. The scope of work ranges from identities and environmental design, such as exhibition and architectural design, the design of a wide variety of books and publications and other printed matter, to time-based media. Projects have been published in numerous magazines and books.

In 2018 he set up a collaborative project, MODERN TEMPERAMENT, together with Till Sperrle, which explores issues of Modernism in visual culture and graphic history through design projects.

In 2008 he was appointed Professor for System-Design / Graphic Design at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig and ran the class until 2014.

Until then he had been Associate Lecturer at London's Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design for eight years and has has been teaching and lecturing at various international institutions.

He is also pursuing research projects, such as one on design and architectural strategies for a re-positioning of the Public Library as public space and institution. These research projects have been repeatedly supported by awarded grants, the latest by the Daiwa Foundation to investigate alternative design schemes and communication approaches for the arts and cultural sector in Japan.

Büro International had originally been set up by Oliver Klimpel and Alexander Müller in Berlin / London, and joint later by Copenhagen's Svend Wennick. Today their practices are run independently.
